Join us at the Sand Castle Contest this Saturday

The Manasquan Tourism Commission is hosting the annual Sand Castle Contest at Big Sea Day at Riddle Way Beach this Saturday, Aug. 9. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 10.

Registration will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the gazebo at Riddle Way Beach. There are three categories: ages 7 and under, ages 8 to 15, and the family category. Castle builders will build their creations between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. The winners will be announced at 1:30 p.m. at the Riddle Way Beach Gazebo.

Winners’ categories include first, second and third place, as well as the Mayor’s Trophy, for each age group.

The contest is intended to be fun while recognizing the most clever ideas and craftsmanship. The use of natural materials is an important part of the judging. Use of sea shells, driftwood, and other natural materials from the beach is encouraged. Judges will be looking for the use of natural materials, a good theme, overall skill, and creativity.

The contest is free to all participants. The Manasquan Tourism Commission has proudly hosted this contest for the past 11 years; it is one of the commission’s many summer events.

“The tourism commission looks forward to the Sand Castle Contest and Big Sea Day all year long,” event chair and Councilman Michael Mangan said. “This family-friendly summer fun event is always a good time for the kids and adults alike. We are looking forward to seeing the same creativity and ingenuity that accompanies the Sand Castle Contest every year.”

Layout 1This Thursday, May 22, join the Manasquan Tourism Commission in celebrating the beach reopening at our annual Cocktail Kickoff!

For just $15, enjoy a drink and a full buffet at Leggett’s Sand Bar on First Avenue from 6 to 9 p.m. There will also be a beach badge giveaway.

This year’s Cocktail Kickoff is more special than usual — we’re celebrating our new, wider beaches, replenished over the winter by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ beach replenishment project. Even more room to spread out this summer!

Tickets are available in advance at Manasquan Lighting, The Coast Star, The Corner Bagelry, and Jaspan Hardware. They can also be purchased from any member of the tourism commission.

We hope to see you at Leggett’s on Tuesday! Until then, here are some recent photos of our beautiful beach and everyone’s favorite inlet.
