We are busy getting ready to host our annual Sand Castle Contest at Big Sea Day on the Manasquan beachfront on Saturday, Aug. 11. The popular event draws many each year, and even if you’re not interested in building a sand castle, be sure to stop by and check out the awesome sand sculptures the competitors create!

Registration will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the gazebo at Whiting Avenue. This year, there will be three categories:

  • Ages 1 to 7
  • Ages 8 to 15
  • The family category

Castle-builders will create their castles between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and judging will be held at 1 p.m. The winners will be announced after the judging. There will be first-, second- and third-place awards in each category, and there is a special Mayor’s Trophy.

The tourism commission has hosted the contest for the past 10 years and it is one of many of our summer events. It is intended to be a fun contest, while recognizing the most clever ideas and craftsmanship. The use of natural materials is an important part of the judging — using shells, driftwood and natural material from the beach is encouraged. Around 55-60 castles are built each year.

Tourism member Jim Coakley is the chairman of the Sand Castle Contest, and had the following to say:

This is always the highlight of my summer. It is fun to watch the younger builders create sand castles from the natural elements. Too, family rivalries have developed over the years and it is great to see which family grouping can win. The whole idea of the contest is to have fun on the beach. Of course, the contest is free. Big Sea Day and the Sand Castle Contest are a great way to enjoy our beautiful beach and celebrate summer in Manasquan.

As always, we hope to see you there!
